Cowboy Junkies
Cowboy Junkies are a Canadian alternative country and folk-rock band from Toronto, formed in the mid-1980s by Margo Timmins, Michael Timmins, Peter Timmins, and Alan Anton. Their sound blends folk, blues, country, rock, and slow, atmospheric alternative music, often centered on Margo Timmins’ quiet, intimate vocal style.
Their most important albums include The Trinity Session, The Caution Horses, Black Eyed Man, Pale Sun Crescent Moon, Lay It Down, Miles from Our Home, Open, All That Reckoning, and Such Ferocious Beauty. Their best-known songs include “Sweet Jane,” “Misguided Angel,” “A Common Disaster,” “Angel Mine,” “Blue Moon Revisited,” and “Anniversary Song.”
They are especially known for The Trinity Session from 1988, recorded in Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity, and for their haunting cover of Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane.” The band helped define a slow, spacious, roots-influenced alternative sound that later connected strongly with Americana and alt-country audiences.
