Esbjörn Svensson Trio
Esbjörn Svensson Trio, often abbreviated e.s.t., was a Swedish jazz piano trio formed by Esbjörn Svensson on piano, Dan Berglund on bass, and Magnus Öström on drums. Apple Music lists the trio as formed in 1990 in Västerås, Sweden, with jazz as its main genre.
The trio became known for a modern European jazz sound that fused jazz, rock, electronic music, classical influences, and Swedish folk elements. ACT Music describes e.s.t. as one of the most influential jazz bands of its time and says their music helped break down traditional genre boundaries.
Important albums include From Gagarin’s Point of View, Good Morning Susie Soho, Strange Place for Snow, Seven Days of Falling, Viaticum, Tuesday Wonderland, Leucocyte, Live in Hamburg, Live in London, and Live in Gothenburg. Qobuz lists a large discography including these major releases, while Apple Music highlights tracks such as “Where We Used to Live,” “From Gagarin’s Point of View,” “Good Morning Susie Soho,” and “The Wraith.”
They are known for making the jazz piano trio format feel contemporary, emotional, and accessible to listeners beyond traditional jazz audiences. After Esbjörn Svensson’s death in 2008, e.s.t. remained highly influential in European jazz, especially for younger musicians and modern piano trios.
