Eva Cassidy was an American singer and musician from the Washington, D.C. area, known for her deeply emotional interpretations of jazz, folk, blues, gospel, soul, and pop standards. Her official Eva Cassidy website says she died in 1996 from melanoma and that her music became widely known only after her lifetime.

Her most important albums include The Other Side with Chuck Brown, Live at Blues Alley, Eva by Heart, Songbird, Time After Time, Imagine, American Tune, Simply Eva, Nightbird, and the later orchestral album I Can Only Be Me. Eva Cassidy is known for her pure, expressive soprano voice and her ability to transform songs from many genres into intimate, emotional performances. Her posthumous compilation Songbird became a major success, reaching No. 1 on the U.K. album chart 25 years ago, according to the Eva Cassidy website.
