Mark Knopfler, born 1949, is a Scottish-born British guitarist, singer, songwriter, composer, and record producer. He is best known as the lead guitarist, singer, and songwriter of Dire Straits, and later as a successful solo artist and film-score composer. Britannica describes him as the front man of Dire Straits and notes his celebrated fingerstyle guitar technique and distinctive sound.

His music combines rock, roots rock, blues, country, folk, and Celtic influences. Important Dire Straits albums include Dire Straits, Making Movies, Love over Gold, and especially Brothers in Arms. As a solo artist, important albums include Golden Heart, Sailing to Philadelphia, Shangri-La, Kill to Get Crimson, Privateering, Down the Road Wherever, and One Deep River.
