Phil Woods

Phil Woods was an American jazz alto saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, and bandleader, best known for bebop, hard bop, post-bop, and mainstream jazz. He was strongly influenced by Charlie Parker but developed his own recognizable sound and became one of the major alto saxophonists in modern jazz. Apple Music describes him as one of the most reliable players in mainstream jazz history and notes his famous alto saxophone solo on Billy Joel’s “Just the Way You Are.”

Important albums and recordings include Woodlore, The Rights of Swing, Musique du Bois, Live from the Showboat, Phil Woods and His European Rhythm Machine, Song for Sisyphus, Bop Stew, Celebration!, and Chesky’s Best of Phil Woods. Deezer and Qobuz list broad discographies for him, including recordings such as Chesky’s Best of Phil Woods, Beyond Brooklyn, New Celebration, and Right to Swing.

Phil Woods is known for his lyrical but fiery alto saxophone tone, deep bebop vocabulary, and long career as both a small-group leader and a respected sideman. Blue Note describes him as “one of the true masters of the bop vocabulary,” and his career also reached pop audiences through session work with artists such as Billy Joel and Steely Dan.
